Shaolin Monks also includes a traditional Mortal Kombat 3d VS mode.Īll in all Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks makes for an excellent combination of new and old Mortal Kombat games, and comes highly recommended for fans and non-fans of the series alike.Ĭlick here to view our 16 Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks in-game screenshot slideshow Some of the cutscenes are, admittedly, a little cheesy but still pretty good but the graphics and animations are superb and the characters look fantastic. The music can (sometimes) be a little overbearing, with voice-overs that will remind you of the good old arcade days of Mortal Kombat. Two player (co-op play) in Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is great as well – and also allows for you to unlock different secret areas (and discover more.) The secrets and unlockables gives Shaolin Monks a great replay value, as well as the many skills that are obtainable as you bust your way through in this adventure. The fighting is multidirectional, with intriguing level designs, that are highly interactive (you can throw enemies onto spikes etc.) Generally you fight off the enemies in each area before combating the big boss of the area, and there are some (fun) platform puzzle sections as well. The game also includes some interesting new moves, such as throwing or grappling, wall running and double jumping, and some great air combo's. Weapons can be thrown at enemies, or used to slash arms and legs off. The game is filled with action, and you can also pick up weapons throughout the game which bring in some new and different moves. The fighting engine is pleasantly complex, allowing for a lot of discovery as you play and replay the game, with a lot of special moves available.

The level designs are expansive, and interesting, with some great play mechanics as well. Many of the classic Mortal Kombat things we enjoyed make their re-appearance- such as the over-the top ludicrous violence, the fatality moves (a unique move of sorts that finishes off a foe) and many of the Mortal Kombat characters. Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks brings an interesting genre back to life – and feels almost like a 3D version of Golden Axe (if you go very far back in arcade gaming) or like Devil May Cry. Despite his defeat, Shang Tsung is threatening to take over the earth realm anyway, and you play either Kung Lao or Liu Kang (or both in multiplayer mode) who are off to go and take care of him once and for all, in the most gruesome way possible. The game is set in between Mortal Kombat 1 (MK1) and Mortal Kombat 2 (MK2.) Humans have won the Mortal Kombat tournament, and Emperor Shang Tsung is on the run. Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is Midway's effort to bring the game back to life again, and it is executed very well.

Anyone who grew up in the 90's and went to the arcades would remember the classic Mortal Kombat games that resulted in movies, comic books and a dozen other spin-offs. Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is a 3d third-person action-adventure-fighting game that brings a very surprising, fresh and unusual twist to the very successful and ongoing Mortal Kombat franchise.
